ECR Pharmaceuticals was formed in 1990 by three former AH
Robins executives, E. Claiborne Robins, Jr., Davis S. Caskey,
and Dr. Robert S. Murphey, to continue their long standing
interests in the pharmaceutical industry. The development
and marketing of cough/cold and analgesic products allowed
the firm to develop its initial core internal staff as well
as its sales and marketing infrastructure. As the firm evolved,
its focus became the development of once daily dosage forms
of widely used products which were previously dosed three
or four times daily. These formulations improve patient convenience
and much needed therapeutic compliance.
In 2007 the firm received its first NDA for the once daily
dosed musculoskeletal relaxant, Amrix® (cyclobenzaprine
HCl, extended release). The product's potential in the marketplace
exceeded ECR's then capabilities and was divested to Cephalon,
Inc. It has become a mainstay in the treatment of low back
pain. ECR also developed once daily dosed antihistamine formulations,
Lodrane 24 and Lodrane 24D, which its sales force currently
markets. Other ECR products are the corticosteroid DexPak
TaperPak and the analgesic, Bupap.
In February, 2009 ECR was acquired by Hi-Tech Pharmacal,
Amityville, NY, a major supplier of liquid, generic prescription
products as well as branded OTC pharmaceuticals. (See Newsline).
The combined firms provide enhanced synergy toward the development
and marketing of various product opportunities, expands product
life cycle potential, and solidifies Hi-Tech's position in
both the branded and generic marketplace.
